Interview: Jazz Vibes Great Gary Burton – Part 1 – seattlepi.com

Gary Burton, by any measure, is one of the most important jazz musicians of his generation. As a player, Burton pioneered the four-mallet approach on vibes that allowed the instrument to be played more orchestrally. Beginning with his work as a sideman, and then later as a leader, he helped bring other musical influences into jazz, helping to define the fusion sound that popularized and revitalized jazz. Burton agreed to be interviewed on the release of Hot House, his 40th anniversary collaboration with Chick Corea.

Ralph Peterson Fo’tet (Friday) During much of the 1990s, his busiest stretch as a bandleader, the incendiary hard-bop drummer Ralph Peterson had a steady outlet in the Fo’tet, distinguished by its blend of vibraphone, bass and clarinet. The new iteration of the band, recently introduced on the engaging album “The Duality Perspective” (Onyx), features musicians who all happen to be Mr. Peterson’s students at the Berklee College of Music: the clarinetist Felix Peikli, the vibraphonist Joseph Doubleday and the bassist Alexander L.J. Toth. From 8 to 11:30 p.m., Rue 57, 60 West 57th Street, (212) 307-5656, rue57.com; $5 cover, with a $15 minimum. (Chinen)

Ron Carter Big Band (Friday through Sunday) Last year Mr. Carter, the eminent jazz bassist, released “Ron Carter’s Great Big Band” (Sunnyside) — somehow his first big-band album as a leader, featuring crisp arrangements by Bob Freedman. For this run he calls on veteran section players and some extremely sharp rhythm-section partners: Russell Malone on guitar, Donald Vega on piano and Kenny Washington on drums. At 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street, Manhattan, (212) 576-2232, jazzstandard.net; $30. (Chinen)

Brötzmann-Adasiewicz Duo / Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society with Chad Taylor (Wednesday) This venturesome double bill features two groups largely rooted in Chicago. The first is a duo of Peter Brötzmann, the veteran German saxophonist rightly revered in free-jazz circles, and Jason Adasiewicz, an expressive young vibraphonist; their most recent New York gig, at the 2011 Vision Festival, provided the source material for a new album, “Going All Fancy” (Brö), that will be available at the show. As for Josh Abrams, he’s a multi-instrumentalist who looks far and wide for sonic inspiration, and he’ll draw here from “Represencing” (Eremite), an album due out in October, featuring the resourceful drummer Chad Taylor. At 8 p.m., Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street, (212) 505-3474, lepoissonrouge.com; $15 in advance, $18 day of show. (Chinen)
